Parking Ticket Unfair! Request for Action Letter

On Saturday, June 9, 2007, at approximately 5 p.m., you entered the Oxford Street parking lot in Berkeley. You know that parking is not free, but when you stopped at the kiosk to pay for a parking permit, you discovered that no attendant was inside. You drove into the lot, parked, and had coffee with a friend for about an hour.

When you returned to your car, you were surprised to find a parking violation citation for $55 on your windshield. The reason marked for the violation was “No Permit.” You looked for a parking official to discuss the unfair ticket but found no one. The violation payment is due on July 21, 2007.

Your Task. On your personal letterhead, write a direct request letter that asks for the ticket to be rescinded. Address your letter to Ms. Dorothy Lawton, Alameda County Parking Services, P.O. Box 1990, Berkeley, CA 94501-1990.

Dear Ms. Lawton:

SUBJECT: Parking Violation 1856943

I believe I received the above parking violation in error and would appreciate your effort to correct the mistake.

On Saturday, June 9, 2007, I drove to the Oxford Street parking lot at about 5 p.m. When I approached the parking kiosk to purchase a permit, no one was inside, so I entered the lot and parked. After having coffee with a friend for about an hour, I returned to my car and found a parking ticket on the windshield.

Because it was impossible for me to purchase the required permit, please rescind the parking violation before it is due on July 21, 2007. You may contact me by e-mail (student@yahoo.com) or by phone at (805) 567-2390 if you have any questions. I would also be grateful if you would notify me that the matter has been resolved before July 20.

Sincerely,
